Arabic Letters Pronunciation Player: A Smart Tool for Learning Arabic Alphabet
Introduction
As someone learning Arabic in the UAE, I found myself needing a better way to practice the pronunciation of Arabic letters. While my Alif Baa textbook provides excellent foundation, I wanted something more interactive - a tool that could play pronunciation videos on loop, allowing me to focus on speaking along without constantly clicking "next video."
That's why I built the Arabic Letters Pronunciation Player - a web-based tool designed specifically for Arabic learners who want to master the 28 letters of the Arabic alphabet through repeated practice.
What Is It?
The Arabic Letters Pronunciation Player is a smart video player that cycles through all 28 Arabic letters, playing pronunciation videos from the Alif Baa course. It's like having a patient tutor who will repeat the letters as many times as you need, at your own pace.
Key Features:
- 28 Arabic Letters: Complete coverage from ا (Alif) to ي (Yaa)
- Smart Playback Mode: Automatically waits for each video to complete before playing the next
- Timed Mode: Fixed interval playback for those who prefer manual control
- Visual Progress Tracking: See which letter is currently playing with highlighted indicators
- Loop Control: Set infinite loops or specify exact repetition counts
- Interactive Grid: Click any letter to jump directly to its pronunciation
- Dark Mode Support: Comfortable viewing in any lighting condition
Why I Built This
When learning Arabic pronunciation, repetition is crucial. The sounds in Arabic are often unfamiliar to English speakers - from the guttural ع (Ayn) to the emphatic ص (Saad). I found myself:
- Manually clicking through videos - Tedious and breaks concentration
- Losing my place - Hard to track progress through 28 letters
- Needing flexible practice - Sometimes I want to focus on specific letters, other times I want the full sequence
Traditional video platforms don't offer the loop control and automatic progression needed for language learning. YouTube playlists auto-play, but you can't easily configure repetition counts or get visual feedback on your position in the sequence.

My Practice Routine
Here's how I typically use the player:
- Morning warm-up (10 minutes):
- Smart Mode with 2 loops
- Follow along speaking each letter
- Focus on mouth position and airflow
- Targeted practice:
- Click difficult letters (ح، خ، ع، غ) directly
- Use Timed Mode with 3-second intervals
- Record myself to compare with the video
- Background immersion:
- Set to infinite loop
- Play while working or cooking
- Passive reinforcement of sounds
Technical Implementation
For fellow developers curious about the stack:
- Framework: Next.js with React hooks
- Styling: Tailwind CSS with dark mode
- Video Source: Alif Baa third edition pronunciation videos
- Deployment: Static export with automatic CI/CD
The player uses client-side state management to handle playback logic, ensuring smooth transitions between videos and accurate progress tracking. Event listeners on the video element trigger automatic progression in Smart Mode.
Future Enhancements
I'm considering adding:
- Speed control: Slow down videos for detailed analysis
- Subtitle overlays: Show transliteration and English names
- Practice tracking: Log which letters you've practiced most
- Mobile optimization: Better touch controls for phone users
- Vowel variations: Extend to short vowels (fatha, kasra, damma)
Who Is This For?
This tool is perfect for:
- Arabic language beginners working through Alif Baa or similar courses
- Self-learners who need structured pronunciation practice
- Teachers looking for classroom playback tools
- Heritage speakers brushing up on formal pronunciation
- Anyone struggling with Arabic phonetics
